9/30/2004: Runway flood

It's another result of Jeanne and the wet summer that preceded her: Flights at the Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania airport are experiencing delays, due to the Susquehanna River on the runway.

Wow! Great picture (well, ok, I am a pilot so this really appeals to me!)

Reminds me of landing at Everglades City in the (duh) everglades near Marco Island....tiny runway with water on three sides... actually had a boat stop for me while I was on approach so I wouldn't hit is mast.

Can only imagine the fun of water on four sides, with the runway slowly dissappearing. You could probably land a little cessna 152 or 172 on that remaining runway but I don't think you could get it back in the air so those guys are certainly trapped!

Like the fact that all the planes and cars are all on the "high" ground...probably a couple feet higher than the rest of the runway.

That's a perspective you don't see too often. Aside from the obvious problems, that's pretty cool. Though I'd figure the river had to rise like a flash flood for those planes and vehicles to get stuck on the runway turnabout. Or is the hanger area underwater and they moved the planes and such because it was actually higher up?

At least it's temporary for those guys. When Da Mayor tore up Meigs Field in Chicago, he trapped a number of small planes. I heard that some had to be dismantled and trucked elsewhere.

Oh my god, I wouldn't like to be a passenger in the cessna if the pilot attempts to land on that little stretch of runway.

xoxoxoBruce  Thursday Sep 30 08:02 PM

Maybe they can bring in some floats for the planes, by boat.

Bullitt  Thursday Sep 30 08:25 PM

Its prolly too shallow Bruce. And you wouldn't want to put a boat thats expensive enough to move those planes in a body of water where you got no clue whats under you.

I am so proud of you all; the obvious sick joke hasn't come up, as they say, so I have to do it.

I've had DC-(size)10s land on my runway.
