Undertoad Thursday Aug 26 11:09 AM8/26/2004: Tomatina 2004
The annual Spanish Tomatino festival, the biggest food fight in the world, where overripe tomatoes are thrown into drunken crowds, happened yesterday. It drew a record 40,000 people. First they wait for the big truck of tomatoes... then when it appears, they go nuts whipping tomatoes at each other.
And after, there's so much juice in the street...
And some of the juice is sweet.

Trilby Thursday Aug 26 11:29 AMI'm getting the idea that Spain is quite a happenin' country. Naked cycling, community food fights...I'm packing my towel and Spanish/English dictionary. I'm on the next flight.
garnet Thursday Aug 26 12:06 PMDefinitely a wild scene. The waste of all those tomatoes sorta bothers me though. That's alotta tomatoes!
chrisinhouston Thursday Aug 26 12:21 PMI see some onions and other vegetables mixed in, think they are going to make some Bolognese!
One can reason that it is all such a waste. But apparently the region has plenty of tomatoes and preumably the farmers were paid for their products and there certainly is no shortage of tomatoes at the markets.
As a child my grandmother always chided me to eat up because their were kids starving in the Belgium Congo. She also said "Don't play with your food", I don't think she would approve of this event.
YellowBolt Thursday Aug 26 03:37 PMThat last one looks like someone took a nasty, wet dump over everybody.

Yeah those poor starving kids, wherever they are. That guilt is STILL working on me.
Cyber Wolf Friday Aug 27 08:17 AMSee, now all they need is a few truckloads of tortilla chips and they'll be SET.
And I'm sure some of those folks will be finding tomato residue for days in places they didn't realize they had.

Thought so. I just wanted to be sure.
Happy Monkey Friday Aug 27 10:05 AMI always thought the world would have been better off if the food I didn't like would be shipped straight to the starving kids.
jdbutler Friday Aug 27 10:46 AMI'm sure there's a Tah-Ray-Zah joke in that picture somewhere...anybody?
Dagney Friday Aug 27 11:51 AMBut HM, what makes you think starving kids will like Liver, Lima Beans and Brussel Sprouts? (Or insert your own ucky food of choice)
Happy Monkey Friday Aug 27 12:18 PMIf they won't eat it, they can't guilt me into eating it.
Tomas Rueda Friday Aug 27 01:13 PMTomatoes...
Spain...
Doing weird stuff...
Are you sure this thread is not mocking me? (yeah, right)
but seriously, I thought that that festival was held in Italy. Oh,well. first they have the pamplonadas (release of wild bulls throught the streets) and now they have the tomatinas. hmmm,(places hand under the chin and raises brow) I think I'm sensing some kind of pattern here.
xoxoxoBruce Friday Aug 27 09:37 PMWe never mock, Texans.
