11/1: Mars is cold

As we patiently await better images from the Mars Odyssey, here is one of the first: a thermal infrared image that tells you how cold it is on the surface. And it's cold. You may think you're cold where you are but on Mars it's bloody freezing.

Actually, looks reasonably warm on the day side. Just off the ice cap, it's already near 0 C (32 F). Granted, it is summer on the hemisphere we're looking at, but still, that's pretty warm.

Martian nights are a bitch, though!

It even has a name. It's called "The South Pole". :-)

I wonder if they have an ozone layer?

So why do we spend so much money for NASA tp tell us this. Elton John already stated such in "Rocket Man".
