7/2/2004: Flamingo chick

A newborn Caribbean flamingo chick sticks its head out of its mother's plummage Monday, June 28, 2004, at the San Diego Zoo. The San Diego Zoo is celebrating the birth of several flamingos, marking the first hatching in several years. The Zoo's flamingo lagoon recently underwent a major renovation thanks to a donation from Audrey Geisel and the Dr. Seuss Foundation. In honor of Geisel's support, the zoo has named the first-born flamingo chick 'Audrey.'

Looks like it doesn't have any coloration yet... I'd always heard that they had to eat shells in order to get that pink color, was that just an old wives tale?

i don't know if it's shells or not, but i do know that they get their coloring from their food. i'll look up a link...

Flamingo color

It comes from the carotenoid pigments (like the pigments of carrots) in the algae and small crustaceans that the birds eat. (Remember one source of beta-carotene is bluegreen algae).

See http://www.sandiegozoo.org/animalbytes/t-flamingo.html from the San Diego zoo.
