6/30/2004: Ugly new fish

Nothing new under the sun - but Brazilian scientists found this new and not-very-good-looking thing under the sea.

The fish, which is a kind of chimaera, or ratfish, is about 12 inches to 16 inches (30cm to 40cm) long, has large, wing-like fins, a whip-like tail and exposed nerves along its body that help it navigate in the deep, dark waters where it lives.

Pi  Wednesday Jun 30 05:47 PM

I believe I can fly... lallallalala

Bullitt  Wednesday Jun 30 07:43 PM

Looks like a ugly frog in mid leap w/ two triangle ham pieces.
Mmm.. Bullitt hungry..

tw  Wednesday Jun 30 07:48 PM

... and tastes like chicken.

Cyber Wolf  Wednesday Jun 30 11:22 PM

It's a deep sea creature, it wasn't expecting someone to come down there with a camera. It never had a chance to freshen up and put its face on.

GuyNamedGuy  Thursday Jul 1 12:14 AM

Oh, I dunno. Do we want to try it with lemon juice on the grill, or do the whole thing with sticky rice and seaweed and the weird spicy stuff?

Look for this new fellow to show up as a bad guy in NEMO II

irma  Thursday Jul 1 07:29 AM

I'm sure there are other unknown species down there. I think it's marvelous to see these previously unknown ones.
With so many species of animals and plants going extinct every year, it's refreshing to see something new popping up.

chrisinhouston  Thursday Jul 1 05:49 PM

Well, this isn't a new discovery but it certainly is one ugly fish

Happy Monkey  Thursday Jul 1 06:07 PM

One of the ugliest:

chrisinhouston  Friday Jul 2 10:33 AM

I guess the real issue is what constitutes "ugly", as most of these sea creatures have evolved over time to live in extreme depths of the ocean where no light can even reach. Many seem to have evolved with big eyes and disproportionate mouths full of sharp teeth to increase their feeding potential. Some have evolved with appendages that act as lures for other fish or sea creatures such as the Angler Fish.

I'd like to think while they may seem unsightly or a bit unnerving, they are in fact beautiful just by the fact of their unique adaptation to their surroundings.

{dogma}
Of course, we all should know that each and every creature was specifically designed by Jehovah God in exactly the way they needed to be designed in order to be successful in the environment which He chose for them. Then, He gave Man (note that I did not say "Woman", which is, of course, merely a less important and subservient part of Man) dominion over all of the beasts of the Earth.

I can prove all of this. It is in the Bible, which is, of course, the revealed and literal word of God, and which is factual down to the last semicolon.

Glad we all got that straight! Now, we can discuss the godless so-called "theories" of atheist scientists which are being shoved down the throats of our impressionable youth in an objective and honest manner, secure in the knowledge that we are living in accordance with the Divine Word and Revealed Truth.

xoxoxoBruce  Friday Jul 2 06:07 PM

Damn you, Els.
You beat me to it AND did it better than I could.

Bullitt  Friday Jul 2 07:08 PM

Esplode you Jehova's Witness? Noticed the "Jehova God" part lol. Not to hijack the thread or anything, but what is the difference between Jehova's and good ol fashion Presbyterians like me.
Feel free to PM so we don't take away from the majesty that is this fish.

xoxoxoBruce  Friday Jul 2 08:45 PM

Not hardy, Bullitt. Try pagan.

Jehova is one pronunciation of one descriptive word for the Christian God. Jehovah's witnesses just have a unique way of worshipping the same guy. For example, they believe that only 144000 people will enter heaven, and yet they spend their lives trying to convert more.

wolf  Saturday Jul 3 02:40 AM

They are supposed to have come up with some workaround on the 144K elect going to heaven thing ...

BrianR  Saturday Jul 3 11:45 AM

they are using the hot-bunk method.

That's because although only 144k will be in heaven with God, the rest of the saved will be living large, right here on Earth with Jesus, Second string is better than being sent to the showers.

Bullitt  Saturday Jul 3 01:33 PM

But now, Jesus and God and the Holy Spirit are one in the same, and when Heaven and Earth reunite sometime way in the future, what will be the difference then between the 144k and rest of us?

*Edit: I'm a lazy ass so i didn't feel like gettin the good ol Bible and quotin stuff. Forgive my sloth.

Nu uh. Does, "Jesus sits on the right hand of God", sound familiar? How about "Holy Trinity"? Not Holy Oneity. At least that's what the JWs were quacking the two years I spent with them, thirty years ago.

Bullitt  Saturday Jul 3 09:07 PM

Well... It is called the Holy Trinity because there are 3 parts. But its really kinda like an egg. You got the shell, the yolk, and the clear stuff. Together its called egg. Seperate parts are still called egg yet they are sepereate and can do seperate things. ( the parts of the Trinity, not the egg lol)

Its also comperable to Christ. He was all God and all man at the same time. Beats the hell outta me how but he was :P.

FYI, I am speaking from a Presbyterian point of veiw so not all of what I say or you say is going to apply to both religions.

xoxoxoBruce  Saturday Jul 3 10:44 PM

I hear you, Bullitt. I was raised in small town without enough protestants to have a bunch of churches, so they had a federated church. All the denominations threw their crap into the pot and came up with a combination of traditions, hymns, etc.
I was trying to explain the JW position on the 144K, as explained to me back in the day. Of course they were also saying it would happen before now.

wolf  Sunday Jul 4 02:58 AM

I didn't realize the JW's had established a timetable for the end of the world/rapture/coming of the Kingdom, etc.

The Seventh Day Adventists, on the other hand did schedule it.

Twice.

And it didn't happen. Both times.

The folks that still belong are the ones that that remained in what had been an end of the world cult after the world didn't end.

Since it hasn't, I guess they haven't,........ successfully.

dar512  Sunday Jul 4 03:08 PM

Ya know, I don't see any Christians thrashing on Paganism or atheism around here. I've seen a fair number of Pagans and atheists thrashing on Christianity. What's up with that?

OnyxCougar  Sunday Jul 4 07:19 PM

Normal for here, Dar.

xoxoxoBruce  Sunday Jul 4 07:27 PM

That's because Christians a peace loving people that never attack anyone.

OnyxCougar  Sunday Jul 4 07:29 PM

Dar didn't say that. And you know it. Go to my New Orleans page and be happy, Bruce!

xoxoxoBruce  Sunday Jul 4 07:51 PM

Yes M'am.

OnyxCougar  Monday Jul 5 07:01 PM

Snapped this at the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans.

xoxoxoBruce  Tuesday Jul 6 06:34 PM

Hey, where did you get that? That's the picture I took of the empty tank. You can see my reflection in the glass.
