10/19: Pill camera

Too cool! From Yahoo Most Popular comes this shot of a pill camera. The pill contains a color vidcam, a light, transmitter, antenna, and battery - so hopefully it never digests, no matter what. You wear a fanny pack and for up to seven hours this thing photographs your insides and transmits to the pack. Then they take off the pack and analyze the images.

Okay...

This thing's as big as my finger ... it's indigestible so it can be recycled ... and it takes full color animated pictures of my body's waste products. Which part of this is good?

For some reason, this brings to mind the movie "Innerspace."

Get in my bellay!
and show me what the hell is *urp* going on in there. I'm guessing a standoff with a bagel and coffee. Perhaps a rogue banana.

I imagine the footage would be initially exciting then get kinda samey during the intestinal portion of the journey. Okay, on we flow, another curve...But then end with a bang if your battery holds out.

Like a toothbrush, you wouldnt really want to share your pill camera, except perhaps with a loved one.

Hmm...

I really hope nobody buys that.

The alternatives involve either

a) exploratory surgery or

b) Blowing your intestines up like a balloon and sticking a realllllly long fiber-optic tube up there while peering around.

BTW, you're supposed to fast before you swallow this thing, so hopefully it gets your innards, not your waste products. And it's single-use.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/hea...000/651014.stm has a little more information like a diagram of the pill.

The capsule, which builds on technology developed by NASA to measure temperature inside astronauts' bodies, would take the place of endoscopes traditionally used by doctors to see inside patients.

Pretty cool. I can just see new "webcams" poping up all over the net. www.seemycolon.com

least its single use.

Having just had an endoscopy, I would opt for the pill version. However, the pill doesn't allow for biopsies which are usually done during the endoscopy.

I was pleasantly drugged for the procedure, but I know one guy who goes through it without drugs, because he doesn't like being in la la land for the rest of the day afterwards.
