4/30/2004: Tamarin baby

This is a baby tamarin, age 10 days, who was rejected by his mother at a German zoo. Tamarins are marmosets, a kind of monkey.

Rejected by his mother and why not. There was a horror TV movie on when I was a kid that featured one of these, and it picked up a knife and attacked humans and was intelligent and basically unkillable even if it was locked in the oven.

Maybe this one isn't so hardass. It takes in 1.5 milliliters of baby food every two hours.

OK I want one.

glatt  Friday Apr 30 12:02 PM

Just look at it. Imagine it was your baby. All covered in fur and with a long tail. THE HORROR!

wolf  Friday Apr 30 12:04 PM

Those french nails are not typical of the zookeepers I've seen ...

hermex  Friday Apr 30 02:35 PM

We can stop looking, this has got to be the world's cutest animal. Even lunging at you, weilding a knife, you would still go "Aaaaww, c'mere little guy!."

Slartibartfast  Friday Apr 30 04:23 PM

Its just the right size to be friends with the albino bat.

smithgr  Friday Apr 30 04:42 PM

You guys are being duped. That's just a gerbil with a Don King haircut.

Lady Sidhe  Friday Apr 30 04:46 PM

They're cute full-grown, too. Imagine a cross between a pomeranian, a chow, and a monkey--miniaturized. An adult can fit into your cupped hands.

Better, it's got a tail to "extract" him with.

Oh, welcome to the Cellar, smithgr.

Cuticle problems too. Left hand, ring finger. eesh.

Beletseri  Friday Apr 30 09:23 PM

Fake nails, the marmoset probably bit her re cuticle, or wielded a knife at her finger.

davepen  Saturday May 1 12:22 AM

I like the nails, manicured and all. The little critter is endeareing also.

pdaoust  Saturday May 1 12:21 PM

eurgh

does anyone else here think manicured nails (especially the French variety) are kinda gross?

Oh yeah, I want a miniature primate too.

wolf  Saturday May 1 12:47 PM

I think they are majorly nasty.

And prone to infection, btw.

elSicomoro  Saturday May 1 11:23 PM

Shut up and eat your freedom fries, you French-hater.

pdaoust  Saturday May 1 11:33 PM

wait...

hey, buddy, I AM French! And proud of it!!!

(just don't tell anyone, would you?)

DanaC  Sunday May 2 08:45 AM

Jesus if thats being picked up as a cuticle problem I should just hide my hands altogether. Dont wear falsies theyre harder to bite.

Undertoad  Sunday May 2 11:00 AM

Did the French manicure start in France?

elSicomoro  Sunday May 2 11:07 AM

Nope.

When it comes to fashion, simply having the word “French” in the description of an idea can yield big bucks. In 1975, Los Angeles-based Orly International, a nail care company, introduced what has become known as the French manicure. Truth be told, the French manicure never had that much to do with the French (other than for the Parisian runway models who sported the look). The classic French manicure actually was created for myriad Hollywood starlets looking for a clean-yet-polished look for their nails. (Source)

xoxoxoBruce  Sunday May 2 03:25 PM

Great idea, slop some really nasty chemicals on your nails (that pass water, or other chems, 50 times faster than skin) then cover with plastic so the chemicals have no way out. Makes the "patch" look archaic.

Cuticles? French nails? or tiny furry creatures?

wolf  Tuesday May 4 01:51 AM

All of the above, but I was specifically referring to fake nails.

tjennings  Tuesday May 4 09:16 AM

Damn, my money was on tiny furry creatures.

Close, but not quite. It was not a monkey, but about a Zuni fetish doll that was... immortal (?) and pissed off. I can see a resemblance, though...

The movie was Terror Of The Doll and I must say that movie FREAKED ME OUT. Thanks for reviving some previously buried nightmares.

Elspode  Friday Feb 11 05:16 PM

The best piece of the ABC Movie of the Week "Trilogy of Terror", starring Karen Black. I would dearly love to see this again.

Undertoad  Friday Feb 11 05:26 PM

!

I saw it when I was 11, and it must have been one of the first horror/scary things I ever saw in my life. I never thought I'd find out what it actually was. Turns out the message board on the IMDB page is full of people exactly like us who were totally freaked out by it when they were kids. Thanks V, thanks Internet, thanks Karen Black for making us little kids pee our pants so bad.
