9/26/2003: Record-setting dog ears

It's been covered widely elsewhere, but it has to be covered here too, not just because 'spode sent it along but because this puppy covers two different common IotD categories: remarkable dogs, and world records.

This guy is Mr. Jeffries, ears measuring 29.2 cm (11.5 in), and he will be in the Guinness book this year. Why's he called Mr. Jeffries? Well his owner is Phil Jeffries, but maybe the owner is a bit showbiz about this dog. It turns out he is the grandson of Biggles, the face of Hush Puppies shoes. And it turns out that the human Mr. Jeffries has insured the ears for L30,000 ($47,800).

I think it's worth it.

Naturally the world is divided by dog people and non-dog people, but the dog people are further subdivided. There are those who prefer the "normal" looking dogs: the labs, the goldens, the cockers; and those who prefer the "wierd" looking dogs: the bulldogs, the chihuahuas, the pugs, the dachshunds, and yes the bassetts. Count me among the latter subdivision.

Of course, none of it matters to the dog.

Pie  Friday Sep 26 02:31 PM

How'd they get that "flying canine" effect?

Here's my personal favorite dog -- I guess she's "a dog-looking-dog". She doesn't have a tail, tho. (Australian Shepherd)

- Pie

Undertoad  Friday Sep 26 03:18 PM

Ah, but... Who's a pretty girl? Who's a pretty girl?

daniwong  Friday Sep 26 03:24 PM

I love both of the pics of the Dogs - they are super cute. But I am a doggie or a kitty person. (More of a cat person) Actually I am just an animal person. I would rather spend more time with animals than some induhviduals I know.

OnyxCougar  Friday Sep 26 04:53 PM

I'm a cat lover type with the furth division of "weird" cat lover type...the manxes, calicos and BEEG cats, but also the Hairless cat. That's a cool lookin cat!

OnyxCougar  Friday Sep 26 04:56 PM

Here's a better pic.

darclauz  Friday Sep 26 04:56 PM

i am solid on the dog side of things. i think cats are disposable pets...and so did all those egyptian wives, who said...yeah! and your cat, too!

i told geo if he went before the cat.... he would get the royal treatment from me too...i would bury his cat with him.

darclauz  Friday Sep 26 04:58 PM

mmmmmmmmmmm.

NICE hairless kitty.

Is that your cat OC? It's pretty freaky even for a hairless (ie. one blue, one brown eye, and those spots )

OnyxCougar  Friday Sep 26 05:20 PM

No, I can't have pets at my apt, and Steve is allergic. We're thinking about seeing if a hairless is an option for his allergies, tho.

LUVBUGZ  Friday Sep 26 05:21 PM

PS

What's weird about Manxes and Calicos? Have you ever personally seen a male Calico? They are extremely rare, has to do with the genetics.

I posted something about this in an IotD Hairless Cat thread. I'm not sure if Sphynx cats have "dander" which is what people are usually allergic to, but I know of people who have these allergies and do fine with Sphynx cats.

Happy Monkey  Friday Sep 26 06:06 PM

Careful! You do know that fur is the natural mitigator of the evil that cats exude, right? It even causes allergies to warn off people especially succeptible to evil! Hairless cats leave you defenseless!

daniwong  Friday Sep 26 06:13 PM

Ok - I like Cats. But the hairless one's kinda scare me. Reminds me of that episode of Friends when Rachel gets a hairless kitty. (Yeah - I'm a Friends addict - wanna make something of it??!!)

Elspode  Friday Sep 26 10:57 PM

Hairless cats *do* have skin flake dander, but the fact that they lack fur makes them tremendously less likely to cause allergic reactions in people who are usually allergic to cats.

Plus, I think they are cool looking in the extreme. I am a cat and a dog and a fish person. I also would have birds, except for 1) I have cats, and 2) my wife is terrified of them due to an unfortunate parrot/hair entaglement incident in her youth.

Many folks with cat allergies can also coexist with the Rex. (Devon or Cornish). Friends of mine with severe allergies and more severe love for cats had one. They still look a bit freakish, but nowhere near as disturbing as the Sphinx.

Jasper. Not really a girl's name, but it fits her. She's a cannonball.

I finally remembered what this cat reminds me of:

Uryoces  Monday Sep 29 04:36 AM

This is my Sophie. She was a Border collie/Sheltie mix. Great dog, very smart, loved to run and heard people. She's sitting on my dad's lap. She wasn't lap dog size, but you couldn't convince her otherwise.

My dad never hascome by an animal honestly. I had to move to Seattle, and couldn't take her, and my dad said that he'd take her, but she was his dog at that point, and I could visit her. He stole my sister's and his neighbor's cat that way too!

Sophie is very cute, Uryoces . You talk about her in the past tense. Is she gone, or is it just that you don't have her and dad does?

A BC/Sheltie is a great mix. I love to watch both breeds herd their familes around like a flock of sheep.

Uryoces  Wednesday Oct 1 02:25 AM

I had to have her down. My dad and I were both crying our eyes out. My uncle helped dig the spot on the hillside, and we ended up digging up the cat my dad buried earlier. So Cat and Sophie are buried together. I'd love to find another border collie mix when I have someplace he or she can run.

chrisinhouston  Wednesday Oct 1 02:00 PM

This shot reminded me of the incident when LBJ picked up his beagle by it's ears and shocked American dog lovers. I couldn't find any images to post of that episode but I did find this one which I don't believe I've seen in the news, so I don't know when it was from. Apparently, President Bush couldn't keep his dog in hand and appears to have dropped the poor darling

President: Stay back, everyone! It may be an Al-Quedog! We should probably drop some bombs or something!

Democrats: It's not this dog's fault! We should give it some free money!

UN Council: Ya know, we like this dog, and we support this dog, but I don't think we should feed this dog or walk it...let's get someone else to do that.

France: mmmmmmmmmmmmm. dog.

Bob Dole: If we gave this dog one of these blue pills, we could get it to stand up again.

Dog: Do you think licking my ass here would get me in trouble?

Clinton: Nahhh....Just tell them it was me.

thought I'd throw in a newer Maximus pic

Just for fun...

Thanks J, I love this dog!

I love your floor. Is that real wood?

jerguar  Friday Oct 3 07:00 PM

actually..

I just put that in by myself. It's Armstrong laminate flooring. Real hard wood wouldn't have stood up to Maximus' nails.

I just went back and read some of the old threads where you posted pics of Maximus. He is simply beautiful . I have never seen an Old English that big. I think about 210 lbs. is the biggest I've seen, but 280...WOW! He's huge. How old is he now? Has he ever shown signs of hip problems? I love Mastiffs so much. I wish I could afford to have one. I am truly a large breed fan, but unfortunately I have never had the room or money to have a Big Dog. Please give him a BIG kiss for me, when he isn't drooly .

LUVBUGZ  Saturday Oct 4 12:07 AM

UT

I know I promised to leave you alone, but that Petersburg Orchid pic had me laughing so hard, then I read your comment, "It's a new breed, possibly a mix of a yorkie and a stalk of broccoli." I almost peed my pants . That was a good IotD pic and great one liner .

Pearl is so cute, Bean too, I have never seen a Boston with so much white. How did you happen to find her?

No hip issues at all so far. He just turned 3 in July and I think he's done growing (I hope). He is a ton of work though. Way more than I ever envisoned, but so worth it to me. He literally eats, sheds, and craps 4X as much as a good sized lab. And the slingers are something else.

Good news about the hips . Usually somewhere between 2 and 3 they exit puppyhood. Usually from here on out the only direction he'll grow is outward (ie. fatter) . As I'm sure you know, but I'll state it just in case, I advise that you keep a handle on his "outward" growth. An obese Mastiff can lead to all kinds of physical problems (hips, back, ankles). Keep him active and at a reasonable weight to ensure his health and happiness, as well as yours . Don't forget to give him that kiss from me . Also, if you can would you post a pic of his smaller buddy, I feel as though he/she is being left out of the spotlight .
