8/18/2003: Indonesian kids bite coins

Sunday was Independence Day in Indonesia, and this is one of the celebrations: kids try to bite coins out of an oiled melon.

No word on what oil that is, but it looks like used 10W-40 out of a 20-year-old Toyota.

Remember, TV and video games are no good for kids, so try to find them alternative entertainment.

LUVBUGZ  Monday Aug 18 03:38 PM

I guess this is one way to keep the kids out of your hair for awhile. Apparently, the the oil doesn't taste all that good by looking at the face of the kid on the right. Or else, he just busted a tooth. Those coins look like they are jammed in there pretty good. Just goes to show what kids will do for a few bucks (coins) these days!

Black gold. Texas tea.
I wonder if they ever use durian, adding scent and spikes to the fun.

They're practicing for marriage. The difficulty of getting money and ......You know.

Great pic, UT.

Don't know about you all, but I've been to Indonesia- Bali a few times now and the kids are so lovely, but watch out for your pockets. They are always asking for Australian gold coins, they melt them down to make jewellery, then sell them back to the tourists. So if in Bali don't purchase anything supposedly made from real gold.

xoxoxoBruce  Monday Aug 18 06:23 PM

What are the Strine gold coins made of, Leah?

Leah  Monday Aug 18 06:28 PM

I'm not really sure Bruce, have to look it up on the net under Australian Mint. They are pretty and shiny when new and look like real gold.

Havent they ever heard of bobbing for apples, and are Indonesian women that bad that you would have to do this for fun.

I guess Ill never date there. lol

Japan,Germany and Russia however is a different story. ; )

y'know, if I were dirt poor (and I'm about two steps away from that), I think I could find some way to entertain myself with rocks and sticks and whatnot that didn't involve getting filthy motor oil all in my mouth...

blyeach. I would've used something like vegetable oil or something a little more digestion-friendly, myself.
