The official caption sez:

I think it's to protect her from evil spirits or something. When she grows up, she can divorce the dog (if it's still alive), and marry a real man.

Maybe it's a praying mantis situation: mate with it, then eat it.

Big deal. I was married to a bitch once, myself.
