July 8th, 2016: Racist German Medal

Karl Goetz was a renowned metal maker in Germany for the first half of the 20th century.

He created these metals in 1920 to promote anti-black sentiment.
This particular one is called The Watch on the Rhine or Die schwarze Schande (The Black Shame).
He wanted to stir up Germans against the black colonial Frenchmen occupying Germany, especially Rhine territory.
Warning they would be saying, 'Where the white women at'.

niall ferguson

in his book "the war of the world: the descent of the west" he mentions this settlement of black frenchmen along the rhine. Who knew? Interesting book.

Diaphone Jim  Friday Jul 8 01:31 PM

I think Die Schwarze Schande may be pretty much NSFW.
Depending on where you work, of course.
I love translations: "..to a tree large phallus bound woman.."
I can't find anything about the symbolism on the helmets.

xoxoxoBruce  Friday Jul 8 02:54 PM

Why would "Die Schwarze Schande (The Black Shame)" be NSFW anywhere?

Diaphone Jim  Friday Jul 8 03:27 PM

Uh, well, I thought maybe a naked woman shackled to an erect penis and accoutrements, helmeted or not, was at least borderline.

xoxoxoBruce  Friday Jul 8 05:46 PM

That's a tree... and rocks... and a helmet.
OK, nipples. But we've had plenty of statues, in metal, with nipples, and nobody bats an eye. Are you saying German's have dirty minds?

Diaphone Jim  Friday Jul 8 06:43 PM

Boy, that's a relief!
I guess it was OK to let my granddaughter take the big printout she made to her best friend's thirteenth birthday sleepover tonight.

I thought it was interesting, so I looked closer and look what happened

Sure the girls will love it. Don't all teenage girls love history?

I did...

xoxoxoBruce  Saturday Jul 9 06:32 PM

Did what? Dream of being tied naked with your lovely nipples protruding to a tree with a helmet?

DanaC  Saturday Jul 9 06:42 PM

No.....love history ;p

But by all means, feel free to have a different image floating round your head

xoxoxoBruce  Saturday Jul 9 10:49 PM

Thank you, I will.
