June 27th, 2015: Watermelon Bread

We're accustomed to seeing strange things from Japan. Many because they get exported, plus the web has shown us many more which remain in Japan. Most everyone has seen photographs of the square watermelons that are all the rage there, and rumored to sell for $800 in Russia.

Taiwan takes it to the next level with bread that looks like a slice of one of those square melons.

The impetus, however, was apparently that kids might not have good appetites during the summer’s hot weather. But if bread was watermelon-shaped, children would want to eat it. Hell, I’m no kid, but I want to eat this.

All I can think about is how intense the red dye must be to remain so red after being mixed with all that white flour and not turn pink.

Having been bread/pasta etc. free for over six months I can't stand the taste or texture in my mouth. It tastes like cardboard. Hard to believe since I was a toast whore for the past 50 some odd years.

From the link.

The bread is made using powered green tea, strawberry, and bamboo charcoal. The vibrant colors really make this look like a summertime treat.
Hard to believe that red comes from strawberry.

I've tried coloring things with strawberry. No way is that just powdered strawberry. Beet juice can get to that level of vibrancy, but it's still more of a fuschia color, not that red.

I don't care what it tastes like.

I ain't eating charcoal.

Maybe the photo is un-un-retouched. That color is unnatural.

Not even BBQ, I've seen some charcoal on ribs and shit.
