April 24, 2014: Gold Crystal

A single crystal of gold weighing 7.7 ounces.

Quote:
It's the size of a golf ball, but a lot more valuable: Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory's Lujan Neutron Scattering Center have verified that a heavy piece of gold, found years ago in Venezuela, is, in fact, a single crystal of the valuable element — and it's worth an estimated $1.5 million.

The lump of gold, which weighs 217.78 grams (about 7.7 ounces), was brought to Los Alamos to confirm whether it was a single crystal of gold, or a more common multiple-crystal structure. "The structure or atomic arrangement of gold crystals of this size has never been studied before, and we have a unique opportunity to do so," Miami University geologist John Rakovan said in a statement.

Actually I believe that should be 7.0 ounces, as gold in measured in 31.1 gram Troy ounces, rather than 28.35 Avoirdupois ounces.

Looks exactly like a wooly mammoth molar. Are they sure it isn't a gold tooth from a pimped out wooly?

You are a nut. A nutty nutty nut.

I am quietly haggissing to myself.

Gravdigr  Wednesday Apr 23 02:07 PM

I didn't know 'quietly' was an option when haggising (haggissing?).

I also did not know gold was crystalline in nature.

glatt  Wednesday Apr 23 03:19 PM

I had no idea gold was a crystal. I've seen fools gold as a crystal.

And haggissing sounds like it would involve flatulence.

blueboy56  Wednesday Apr 23 03:21 PM

Pardon me, I have been off planet for a while. What is haggissing?

Gravdigr  Wednesday Apr 23 04:26 PM

A Cellar Dwellar was trying to type 'haha' on their phone. The phone autocorrected 'haha' into 'haggis'.

It's meant as a Cellar-alternative to LOL.

For instance, if a rooster stabbed you in the privates with his beak, you might post:

"I've been pecked in the pecker by a pecker pecker!"

And some clever Dwellar might post:

"Haggis!"

Gravdigr  Wednesday Apr 23 04:28 PM

I think that's how it came about, anyway.

infinite monkey  Thursday Apr 24 09:29 AM

Yes, that's it. It was me, on my old phone.

Just in case anyone missed this gem. We could lead the internet into the gangster mammoth world.
