CaliforniaMama Wednesday Jun 26 01:21 PMJune 26, 2013 - London Eye
I came across this image when I was looking at bridges and thought it was a lovely shot of the Eye. Can't remember where I saw it, though. My apologies to the photographer.

ZenGum Saturday Jun 29 09:10 AMSeriously, that is a really good photo with the foreground composed so well.
And by god this place is full of smartasses.
Lamplighter Saturday Jun 29 09:36 AMSo how was the London Eye constructed... ?
= built horizontally on the ground and then tilted upright
= built horizontally on the ground and then flown in by helicopter
= cables strung from the supports, one-at-a-time, and built vertically
The answer is here

I am compelled to reply in images . . .
via The Liquid Highway
There is a series of construction images at Construction Photography.
Lastly is this lovely image I found at The Garden of Eaden:
BigV Saturday Jun 29 10:04 PMThat is a very usual lift for a crane. Not directly upward, but laterally.
xoxoxoBruce Sunday Jul 7 04:41 PMIt took 10 days to raise it.
But it's a big rip off, it only goes 0.033 rpm, that's no fun.
Sundae Monday Jul 8 04:29 AMMeans you get more smooching time at the top
