CaliforniaMama Thursday May 2 11:43 AMMay 2, 2013 - Banana Umbrella
Two Indonesian boys use a banana leaf to stay dry on the way to school.

Doesn't need to work, it's Indonesia. It's probably 95F.
Sundae Friday May 3 11:46 AMWhen I was in Sri Lanka I was amazed at how happy and clean the school children were.
And I don't mean that (I hope) from an ignorant Western persepective.
On various trips and tours I saw where these children lived. As a child I was lucky to leave my brick-built house with a washing machine in a maritime climate without having some sort of smut ot crease or toothpaste mark I'd managed to hide from Mum.
These children left the equivalent of shacks and shanties in pristine white dresses or shirts every day. Walking on mud roads.
And yes, Cali, great photo.
Thanks for all your work on IotD.

It is one of the great mysteries to me why people who live in dusty, dirty terrain tend to wear white. To reflect the sun, to some extent, I'm sure. Except for the poor women in black burquas in the Middle East.
And thanks for the note of appreciation. I love doing it and it is one the bright spots in my day.
I apologize I'm not as consistent as I'd like to be. I'm the one who never got sick and now I've had two bad bouts of flu/respiratory infection. The first, Feb 27, I had just gotten over when I got hit again Tues, Apr 30. I have never been this sick in my life!!!!
xoxoxoBruce Friday May 3 03:42 PMWell you might not get sick if you used a real umbrella instead of a banana leaf.
