April 22, 2013 - Earth Day Orchid

From DisneyNature's 2013 Earth Day video Wings of Life .

Lamplighter  Monday Apr 22 03:22 PM

Now I'm caught between Horsehead Nebula and the Geigo Pig

"Wheeee"

xoxoxoBruce  Monday Apr 22 03:57 PM

The Orchid family is amazing, so many different shapes and colors.
.........

I've been told you don't see them in people's homes because they are hard to house break. But maybe that's just the really cool ones, and the ones that look like more normal flowers are around, but we don't realize they're Orchids..

ZenGum  Monday Apr 22 07:56 PM

The reason orchids are so weird is that the genes which control the development of the flower are all on a single section of the DNA (just one chromosome, IIRC) which doesn't do anything else. This means random changes to the flower can take place without messing up stuff like the plant's biochemistry and overall structure.

Ah, dat splain it. Thanks.

Gravdigr  Tuesday Apr 23 01:21 PM

The plant we get vanilla from is an orchid...Do we eat any other orchids?

Lamplighter  Tuesday Apr 23 01:33 PM

Being familiar with the word "orchidectomy", my brain immediately
bounced your question over to: "Yes, Rocky Mountain Orchids"

Undertoad  Tuesday Apr 23 01:49 PM

What you mean "we" kemosabe?

I had some at a Rockies game once during a visit to Denver.

xoxoxoBruce  Tuesday Apr 23 04:36 PM

Yeah, but you eat Lutfisk and slurp oysters, so we know that you're a human garbage disposal.
