August 12, 2011 Raising Panda

Attachment 33439

Quote:
In 2006, according to The Washington Post, the research team introduced a captive-born male cub into the wild only to have it tragically rejected and killed by its free-roaming brethren.

This time around, researchers are doing everything in their power to ensure a successful introduction of the 4-month-old cub pictured above. That includes, of course, dressing up in panda costumes whenever they come in contact with the cute little guy. If the baby panda is taught to associate with only pandas, perhaps it will develop the social skills it needs to adapt to the wild.

A convenient excuse to make the fur suit fetish seem normal?

Pedo-pandas.

ZenGum  Saturday Aug 13 09:26 AM

Sure, they mean well, but that panda is going to grow up warped. He'll come to a bad end, trying to do lady pandas human-style.

That is gorge.
But never forget that animals bred in captivity are subject to culls nonetheless.
Copenhagen Zoo put down an 18 month old giraffe called Marius today.

Breeders have less respect for life than they do for their breeding program, unfortunately.

The Chinese in the Panda suits are wasting their time and energy. Wild Panda's don't kill other Panda's because they weren't raised by humans in Panda suits! They kill them because they are intruders into their territory, and because they can. Lots of species do the same: Cougars, Grizzlies, etc.

If the Chinese want better success, they need to get out of those funny suits, and start releasing the Panda's as paired adults, into their own separate territory. Since there are so few wild Panda's left, and lots of space, that should be simple enough to do.

Not as cute, but surely more effective.
