Undertoad Tuesday May 10 06:58 PMMay 10, 2011: One body two heads
Quote:
Twins are often close, but few are as close as the conjoined twins born in China on Thursday. The girls - who were transferred from a hospital in Sichuan province to one in Chongqing - have two heads but share a single body.
The local Huaxi Metropolis Daily reported the twins weighed 9 pounds and measured 20 inches. They have two arms, two legs, two spines, and two esophaguses but share other organs.
The twins are believed to suffer from dicephalic parapagus, the Daily Mail reported. That's a condition in which a fertilized egg fails to fully divide, and it's extremely rare.
How rare? The condition occurs once in every 50,000 to 100,000 births, according to a medical literature review published in 2005. In part because of anatomical problems, about 40 percent of conjoined twins are stillborn, and 35 percent die within the first 24 hours of life.

Exceptionally large population = more chances of billion-to-one outcomes.
I feel sorry for the parents most of all.
The little girls are as yet unaware that they are one of nature's cruel jokes, the parents are fully cognisant. And probably looking back with nostalgia on the days when the local hillside was an option.
[/insensitive]
glatt Wednesday May 11 01:07 PMClicking through to the link, the doctors/nurses taking care of the twins seem to be wearing expressions of disgust. Although maybe it's concern. Looks like disgust though.
Pete Zicato Wednesday May 11 03:04 PMI don't see disgust. Concern with a little "Oh Fuck", thrown in.
footfootfoot Wednesday May 11 03:10 PMand a tad of "eww, don't touch it."

Apparently the parents chose to give the twins up pretty much as soon as they were born. They said they couldn't afford to look after such severely disabled children.
Also, according to the report Doctors believe it is extremely unlikely that there would be any way of successfully separating them.

I still feel sorry for them. The death of a newborn is traumatic enough - but giving birth to a live baby with such an extreme mutation and knowing you've left it alive with strangers could at least equal that.
And no, I honestly can't believe they could be separated.
Even if they decided one human brain had more value than the other - some Doctors have to make those choices after all - the sheer task of replumbing would be prohibitive. I don't mean to be glib, just couldn't think of a better way to describe the diverting and restructuring of all the various vessels and muscles and tubes etc.
Left alone the child must surely die; one heart two brains - how could the circulatory system cope? It seems to me the kindest thing to do is let it go gently into that good night.
DanaC Wednesday May 11 05:17 PMOh I still feel sorry for them. I mean, what a fucking nightmare all round. That picture is a little window onto someone's personal hell (Not Clods, hers has higher flames ;P).

ZenGum Wednesday May 11 09:51 PMThere's a "one cup" joke here, but it is pretty awful.
