Jan 4, 2011: Sarcophagus

This 1800 year old Roman sarcophagus was discovered in 1931, and they're still figuring out who's in it.
The incredibly detailed battle scene carved on the outside, must have taken a long time and enormous expense.

From the carvings they think it's Aulus Iulius Pompilius, but can't be sure.
In that detailed carving, only the face of the general was left blank.

Fantastic pics. Anyone on FB should link that page, they have some great stuff.

My guess is that the face was left blank because it was a display model only and when you placed your order it would be customized for you...

Lamplighter  Tuesday Jan 4 09:52 AM

So it's only a 1x3 ft salesman's model ?

Or because we're still waiting for the person to die. He's been exercising regularly, watching what he eats, and wandering around Europe for the past 1800 years. A roamin' Roman.

What makes you guys think it is really meant for dead people? Clearly it's some Roman teenage girl's hope chest.

As in: She hopes she doesn't end up in it anytime soon?

Isn't that Joaquin Phoenix in the top right corner?

Yeah classic battle scene.. Lady with her breast hanging out. I see that in most bloody battles. Like she what, doesn't notice one of her girls is loose?

ZenGum  Wednesday Jan 5 07:02 AM

She could take someone's eye out with that nipple, though.

No. No shades.

Also, she's kinda 'manly' looking.

I don't see it that way.

I might chip a tooth, though.

eta: breathtaking carving!
