Oct 1, 2010: Shrimp DeJour

Behold the Peacock Mantis Shrimp, like something Disney animators would dream up... on acid.
He looks like a Harlequin clown of the sea, but he's really a killer clown from the deep.

He esentially bludgeons his prey to pieces, to eat their bloody pulp.

Quote:
Looks sure are deceiving here because this guy is what's known as a smasher, with club shaped raptorial appendages that it uses to repeatedly smash its prey until it can gain access to the soft tissue for consumption.
It is reported to have a "punch" of over 50mph. The fastest punch of any living animal.

It looks like two creatures (sort of like when one person sits on another person's shoulders so you see the legs of one and the head of the other).

jinx  Friday Oct 1 09:03 AM

Aside form smashing things, they can see circular polarized light and 100,000 colors. Lots of articles about their eyes/vision in Wired...

monster  Friday Oct 1 09:12 AM

I don't eat shellfish But he sure is purdy. I'd keep one as a pet and give him creatures to smash. I'd call him Archibald.

Gaudy displays like this are Mother Nature's way of saying "Bring it, motherfucker!"

Gravdigr  Friday Oct 1 02:17 PM

He looks like a pimp.

A shrimp pimp?

ETA: lmao @ "Bring it, motherfucker!"

Trilby  Friday Oct 1 03:28 PM

I wouldn't have allowed in on the ark.

Happy Monkey  Friday Oct 1 04:12 PM

It would have punched you at 50mph, and then laughed, and went back to the bottom of the sea anyway.

"I am not a shrimp! I am a King Prawn!"

spudcon  Friday Oct 1 08:05 PM

BigV, I think you nailed it. I'm alergic to shrimp, so I say, step on it.

SPUCK  Saturday Oct 2 06:49 AM

Looks like a trailer trash couch.

spudcon  Saturday Oct 2 08:32 AM

OK, now Spuck is the winner.

Cloud  Saturday Oct 2 11:28 AM

oh, god. The "king prawn" makes me lmao every time!

I love, love, love that movie! (Muppets from Outer Space)

Leah  Tuesday Oct 5 08:08 PM

This little guy missed his part in Finding Nemo. He would have been great in that movie. Bummer.

casimendocina  Wednesday Oct 6 09:01 AM

No reason why he can't be in the sequel.

xoxoxoBruce  Wednesday Oct 6 10:38 AM

There is a reason, he'd punch and eat the whole cast and crew.

casimendocina  Wednesday Oct 6 07:13 PM

Put him in a contained area, chuck 'dispensables' in with him, get it on film and it would be the perfect action movie.
