Aug 25, 2010: Dog-paddling Lifeguard

The dog-paddling lifeguard is probably the lowest paid on the team.
Or the first one voted off the island, for making the rest look bad.

Kind of a hairy lifeguard, but this is Italy after all.

Quote:
These incredible dogs function as a kind of Canine Coast Guard off the shores of Italy, where beaches gets crowded in the summer, and thousands of swimmers need rescuing. Here, dogs from the Scuola Italiana Cani Salvataggio (Italian School of Canine Lifeguards) practice a rescue operation. The dog pulling his friends does this in real life with rescued humans aboard.

Awwwwwwwwwww!

BeltNah  Wednesday Aug 25 01:28 AM

I have one of these dogs. The breed is called Newfoundland. They are a great dog and very good swimmers, they have webbed feet. lots of good videos on youtube.

xoxoxoBruce  Wednesday Aug 25 01:56 AM

They use Labs, Goldens and Neufies, over 66 lbs.
I had a Neufie/Border Collie cross. Black curly hair, web feet, and 165 lbs... a gentle giant.

He's actually towing them to Vick's Chinese Restaurant.

He's not wearing a gold chain with a crucifix!

good dawgs!

Cloud  Wednesday Aug 25 09:41 AM

this is why dogs are fantastic animals! even though I prefer cats for my personal companion animals, dogs are more useful in more circumstances, especially when doing what they are bred and trained for. Bravo!

But cats get so pissy when you throw them in the water to tow your boat.

Cloud  Wednesday Aug 25 02:15 PM

uh, yeah. that's why dogs are better for that. cats cuddle better, though.

ToastyOhs  Wednesday Aug 25 02:50 PM

The dog pulling the raft needs some 80's style montage music to speed the trip up.

sweetwater  Wednesday Aug 25 09:13 PM

Someone should put windows on that raft so the dogs can hang their heads out and pant & bark, and slap their tails in other dogs' faces.

ZenGum  Friday Aug 27 12:23 AM

What happens when they need to do CPR?

Juniper  Friday Aug 27 01:28 AM

I have a Lab mix who also has webbed feet.

Unfortunately he is *terrified* of water, go figure.

Cute photo!!! I love me some hard-workin' doggies.
