10/23/2002: New big shoe

Oh no! About a year ago IotD highlighted a gent who was a shoemaker, who had built the world's largest shoe as a tribute to 9/11. Now this - he's been ousted- a new group has built a larger piece of footwear. The townspeople of Marikina, in the Philippines, built the new record-setting shoe.

And what kinds of civic projects could you do for YOUR town?

blowmeetheclown  Wednesday Oct 23 04:47 PM

"Now where's my other shoe? I must've left it in Marikina."

perth  Wednesday Oct 23 04:50 PM

yeah, but if i remember right (and im real hazy on this) didnt the first guy make his shoe out of, you know... 'shoe material'? like leather, etc.? the giant shoe was an actual shoe which could actually be worn by an actual giant foot, should such a thing come to be.

this, on the other hand, seems to be a giant model of a shoe.

maybe its just me.

Here's the other big shoes thread.

We had painted cows (or rather painted plastic cows) on street corners as a civic project. They wouldn't let PETA do a butchered painted cow though.

...And now the small children of the village are being placed, one by one, as sacrificial offerings to the mighty wingtip.

Make a giant cake in the shape of a giant shoe? Kill two records with one stone.

We're doing this thing with road killed white tails. See you leave them in the ditches and they give a visual /offactory performance...

Filipino workers tie the shoelace of a giant shoe, said to be the world's largest, in preparation for its unveiling in Marikina city, on October 21, 2002. Bomb blasts in the Philippines appear to have shooed off representatives from the Guinness Book of World Records who had been due in the country to size up the jumbo footwear. Now we just need someone to Photoshop Ed Sullivan in there.
