June 14, 2010: 20 Years

Look around your yard, your neighborhood, your town/city.
What has changed in the last 20 years?
Probably quite a bit, businesses and buildings have come and gone.
Almost a sure bet there are less trees, and more buildings/traffic/noise.

But it's also a pretty good bet, the changes you see are not as extreme as Shanghai.

To see changes that extreme, you'd probably have to look in the mirror.

sHANGHAI HAS BEEN sHANGHAID!

lupin..the..3rd  Monday Jun 14 12:41 AM

Wow, the difference is like day and night!

xoxoxoBruce  Monday Jun 14 01:10 AM

Smartass.

Gravdigr  Monday Jun 14 05:38 AM

I thought maybe this bldg was a survivor, but I've already changed my mind. Looks like every single bldg has been replaced. Kinda sad, really.

I bet that's not even the same water in the river.

SPUCK  Monday Jun 14 05:55 AM

There are many of the same buildings. The two pictures are from different vantages so in the second the buildings are much smaller so you might not recognize some of them.

SPUCK  Monday Jun 14 06:03 AM

Note these..
Also a whole wall of new taller buildings are amost completely obscuring any older buildings that were in the old picture closer to the shore.

Gravdigr  Monday Jun 14 07:26 AM

Well nevermind then.

Your far right line is wrong, but the rest of them look to be spot on.

Adak  Monday Jun 14 08:18 AM

I don't know what's funnier:

the "Upright Vacuum" Bldg.

or

the "I SHIT" sign.

monster  Monday Jun 14 08:18 AM

Am I missing something? the comparison shots do not appear in the OP -just the night shot with the added "labels"?

Adak  Monday Jun 14 08:33 AM

@Monster: Nope, it's odd, but there's no day shot to compare with the night pic, in the OP.

Maybe the day pic looked at the Vacuum Bldg., and laughed so hard it fell right off the forum?

I fixed it, the op picture had been overwritten.

monster  Monday Jun 14 12:13 PM

ah. That's happened before with something I posted.

dmg1969  Monday Jun 14 12:18 PM

I noticed another difference too. See if you can spot it.

Diaphone Jim  Monday Jun 14 12:19 PM

This comparison came immediately to mind:

Looks exactly the same to me.

Sundae  Monday Jun 14 02:58 PM

That's not an upright vacuum, that's a bottle opener!

classicman  Monday Jun 14 03:31 PM

I think I screwed up the original picture.. (I didn't notice) Turns out if you upload the same file name the server takes the new pic and writes it over the old one. Most servers randomize the uploaded pics.. I will be vvvvvvvvery careful next time.

Undertoad  Tuesday Jun 15 09:29 AM

Yes, the system (of hosting Cellar images) was really only ever intended for I's of the D so I didn't harden it against that sort of thing.

Another difference

Wow. What a change.

Another difference is in the sky itself. You can seen a much more distant horizon in the older picture. It could just be the weather or time of day, but it's just as likely it's pollution.

And I was also going to provide an image showing more links between to two shots but I'm not allowed to post images yet. But to get a good idea of the difference in perspective, look at the clock tower at the very right in the old picture. You'll notice it is a little left of center in the newer picture.

The second picture was also taken at almost night.

Post #9 shows the relationship of the clock tower.
Oh, and welcome to the Cellar, loondawg.
