April 25, 2010: Boar Busting

Germany is having a lot of automobile wildlife collisions.

Quote:
A total of 27 people died and 3,000 were injured in a quarter of a million collisions with wild animals on German roads in 2009, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of animals that perished in the process, ADAC, the largest automobile club in Europe, said on Tuesday.
They are particularly worried about wild boars, because unlike squirrels, they are heavy and solid, they are also plentiful.

Quote:
In Germany, hunters shot a record 450,000 boars in the 2008/2009 season, which runs year-round beginning on April 1, according to figures from the German Hunting Federation (DJV). That was up by a third from the previous season and gives the best available indication of the population. The total number of boars roaming the forests, suburbs and maize fields of Germany is now estimated at between 2 million and 2.5 million.
So, ADAC is doing some testing to see how much damage boars cause.

No boars were harmed in these tests.

Ahh we got that beat hands down!

Conover et al. (1995) estimated that 726,000 deer-vehicle accidents occur annually in the U.S., and that deer-vehicle accidents result in 29,000 human injuries, 211 human fatalities, and over $1 billion (Conover 1997a) in property damage annually.

so, those are plastic boars?

squirell nutkin  Sunday Apr 25 10:21 AM

just watched the mythbusters where they make a giant ass rubber moose and bash at least a dozen cars into it. Moral: Don't hit a moose with your car at any speed.

squirell nutkin  Sunday Apr 25 10:27 AM

If the US had a similar boar:area ratio we would have about 68 million boar in this country. For comparison, we have about 30 million deer in the US. 95% of them in PA.

No. Boars were harmed in these tests.

Undertoad  Sunday Apr 25 05:17 PM

This test is bizarre. Couldn't they just measure what sort of damage was done with regular cars hitting regular boars on regular roads?

Diaphone Jim  Sunday Apr 25 07:42 PM

Plastic models would be useless in determining damage to vehicles.
There doesn't seem to be a shortage of real ones to use, with the advantage of being nicely tenderized when the test is over.
And I'm not so sure wild boar sows have tusks that large.

dmg1969  Monday Apr 26 11:43 AM

I find this "boaring".

Sheldonrs  Monday Apr 26 11:52 AM

I guess this is what they mean by the Boar War.

ToastyOhs  Monday Apr 26 12:33 PM

I get the fake boars for safety and testing constants, but is that a real dude in there?

Shawnee123  Monday Apr 26 12:35 PM

No, he's plastic too. You can tell because his tusk is bigger than normal.

I was all broken up over it. (looks like the boars were too)

My great-great-grandparents were full-blooded Shawnee.

My dad's side came from Switzerland. Late 1800s.

And whatever else is mixed in there.
