April 10, 2010: Scarecrows

Kumeu, New Zealand is wine country. Every fall, for three weeks during March and April, Kumeu has a scarecrow festival.

Quote:
Many weird and wonderful Scarecrows are expected to take up residence around Kumeu in March/April 2010, when the three week celebration of art, wine and entertainment returns for the fourth Kumeu Scarecrow festival.

From Monday 29th March, the mayhem and excitement builds as scores of scarecrows proudly take their place on the festival trail, running along state highway 16 and through the participating vineyards and businesses. Everyone is encouraged to let their creative juices flow and be involved in this exciting festival by entering a scarecrow into one of the four categories: Schools/Pre-schools, Family, Adults and Business categories.

Obviously it's to drum up tourist business, and maybe fines on driving winos.

The festival site doesn't show many pictures, most of these were found at Wunderground.

Is that keg covered with condoms?

DanaC  Saturday Apr 10 06:59 AM

Har! There's a scarecrow festival around here, each Summer. Last year some bastards wrecked all the scarecrows.

lumberjim  Saturday Apr 10 10:00 AM

the local school near where I work has a scare goose on the football field to keep the geese from shitting it all up.

looks like this:

just a 2D image of a dog is enough to fool the geese.

rditlkustoleit  Saturday Apr 10 07:37 PM

It worked!? Now I'm definitely afraid to go to Kumeu.

xoxoxoBruce  Sunday Apr 11 01:25 AM

Well, that's something to crow about.

spudcon  Sunday Apr 11 02:00 PM

I'd rather have the geese. They seem to keep the crows away.

SPUCK  Monday Apr 12 06:01 AM

What's wrong with crows? I love them! A bird with a brain - what a concept..

Well, except for that one I watched trying to beat the brains out of its reflection.

spudcon  Monday Apr 12 06:08 PM

Crows flock and fight at dawn, cawing the whole time, and do it outside my window. Then they shit on my car. The geese are quiet, unless they're threatened. The shit on my lawn, but I don't have to wash that.

SPUCK  Tuesday Apr 13 04:35 AM

While I was in college in Sacramento I was walking back to my apt with a bag of groceries. In the middle of a huge empty parking lot it suddenly started raining walnuts on me. The instant they hit the ground a murder of crows landed and started eating the meat out of them. Then more showed up and started dropping walnuts. If they didn't crack the first time they would pick them up and re-drop them from altitude. I was amazed.

spudcon  Tuesday Apr 13 08:25 AM

And after they pelted you with walnuts, you still like them?

Spud - that's so close to poetic:

Crows flock
and fight at dawn,
cawing the whole time.
Outside the glass
first light reveals
geese pacing on the lawn.

jinx  Tuesday Apr 13 01:03 PM

Shitting though, not pacing.

When I first wrote it, it was much longer and had a dueling theme (pistols at dawn, etc.)

My computer crashed and I was too lazy to re-write it.

spudcon  Tuesday Apr 13 03:49 PM

I didn't know I still had poetry in me. Thank you for recognizing it. The title will be "shitty birds"

My shotgun fires, and I gather my lunch.
