10/9/2002: Cargo ships buildup

Hundreds upon hundreds of cargo ships are just floating around on the West Coast waiting to be unloaded.

very neat image, sort of surreal. anyone know where a higher-res version may be found?

Cool image, kind of a calm D-Day. Anybody know what percentage of traffic got re-routed to Mexico?

arz  Wednesday Oct 9 04:08 PM

Ensenada

Ensenada was able to take some ships, but the problem with that port is that it is too shallow to accept many of the "super freighters."

What's the story behind the picture?

I think it's something about a strike that was costing the American economy in excess of a billion dollars a day.

btw juju, what planet are you logged on from?

jaguar  Wednesday Oct 9 05:28 PM

A high res would make a fantastic background...

Undertoad  Wednesday Oct 9 05:28 PM

Hi-res version: in wire photos, there's always a chance that MSNBC makes it one of their pics of the week. When that happens I try to pick it up and put it in the thread. Otherwise, I've tried to work my way through the AP trying to get information about images, but I never get very far.

They trickle the news images out to us on purpose, I think. I would be happy to pay a wire service for rights to some of their shots, to get better access, and to make this all legal, but they just aren't oriented around small players.

Ohh yeah I forgot about that. I've missed the news these past few days, though now I remember the thread on here about this.

I used to worry about UT relying on CNN for his news of the world, until I realized that some people get their news from the Cellar.

juju  Wednesday Oct 9 08:30 PM

Well, usually I watch NBC Nightly News. But i've been tweaking the PVR software I have set up on my computer, and I haven't been recording stuff lately.

I'm actually going to get cable tv on Monday, so hopefully my potential sources will increase.

Undertoad  Wednesday Oct 9 08:32 PM

I don't rely on CNN.

juju  Wednesday Oct 9 08:34 PM

Come on, man. You love CNN. Don't deny your roots.

Love and reliance are two different things.
