You might have heard the US has been having a bit of snow, every state except Hawaii, actually. New York city is no exception, and like most places they use salt to combat the ice and snow.
Like most cities, New Yorks electric system in underground, and connected by tunnels & conduits are vaults, containing transformers and switchgear.
When salt melts snow/ice it makes saltwater, highly corrosive and highly conductive saltwater, that seeks the lowest level around... the vaults.
The explosion shot a fireball higher than the seven story building, blowing out windows and sooting the facade. Nobody was hurt because they had advance warning of smoke pouring out of the vault.
Notice how the New Yorkers are dazed and cowering in fear.
