Aug 7, 2009: Whale of a Meal

Quote:
Having a whale of a time: The amazing moment a polar bear feasts on the blubbery remains of a dead orca.
That's not an Orca. But anyway, the bear is willing to share with the Gulls, but I wonder what would happen if another bear arrived?

Quote:
The polar bear is an enormously powerful predator, able to kill an adult walrus, although it rarely attempts to as a walrus can be more than twice the bear's weight. The whales are of similar size to the walrus and nearly as difficult for the bear to subdue. Most terrestrial animals in the Arctic can outrun the polar bear on land as polar bears overheat quickly, and most marine animals the bear encounters can outswim it.

I have seen footage of polar bears killing whales, I think orcas.

The whales were trapped under an ice floe with only a small hole to come up and breathe through. A couple of bears lurked at the top and as a whale came up, jumped in a mauled it. The whales had no choice but to keep coming there for air. Eventually one was killed, then the bears dragged it up on the ice. It weighed 8 to ten times what a bear weighs.

... and yet, I still want to hug a polar bear.

xoxoxoBruce  Friday Aug 7 12:32 AM

Those are Belugas.

ZenGum  Friday Aug 7 01:07 AM

[scratches head] yep, I think that was it.

"Worlds most powerful predators" or some such schlockumentary. I watched it, tho.

Sundae  Friday Aug 7 02:13 AM

Technically, it should be called an Arctic Bear.
Because they are only present in the Northern hemisphere.
Funnily enough, whales are towards the top of the food chain in the Antarctic, scoffing up the pengions, nom nom nom.

Even without old Teddy, I agree there is something so appealing about bears.
I trust them more than monkeys anyway.

I wonder if there are any BIPOLAR bears?

That comes from living near the north pole and the rotation of the earth.

Does that mean the right-handed bears would be polar opposites?

Sometimes. Unlike the whales, always blubbering on about something. "Oh, look at me, I'm a big giant meal. Oh, look at me, a mean old bear is eatin' my ass..."

If you put things back where they belong, you wouldn't have this problem.
