Aug 5, 2009: Ants

Ants are tiny, and it's a good thing after seeing how they carry this potato chip up a wall and into their home.
If they were bigger they'd be rustling cows.

Across the sidewalk and up the wall.



Then at the top they turn that sucker sideways and slide it into the opening under the cap.



The ants standing on top of that chip, while the maneuver it into the opening, must be the bosses.

Impressive, but they should eat more healthily if they want to stay fit.

I wish I could ring a bell and have them clean up my dishes like that.

And if you peep into the crack in the wall you'll see a tiny TV and bowls of pop corn and a keg.

Those ants have high hopes!

Man I would have waited til they got that sucker in and then filled that crack with liquid ant killer til it flowed out the cracks at the bottom of the wall.

After looking at those pics several times and thinking about them for a day, I have to agree with dar.
A cute little set up, but a set up nonetheless.

Set-up agreed: Isn't there usually a trail of those suckers, not just one little conglomeration around a chip?

I've seen plenty of nature shows on PBS where ants team up to carry a large find back to the nest.

Just saying whenever I've seen an ant invasion, there may be a crowd gathered around the bounty, but there tends to be a trail ahead of and behind the blob. Just saying...

My problem is with the second to last and last pictures. How do those little ants get the chip to go from vertical to horizontal? Just seems suspect to me.

Wooooow, how cool! Ive heard alot about ants and have some in my garden but never seen them do that! I ve only seen them crawl in my Beercan and get out again drunk! And thats it, all day long! Maybe because theyr all Belgian ants?

If those ants want that chip in that crack, they'll find a way. When I was a kid, I used to put different things on anthills, just to see how they'd cope. They always solve the problem. I once put a large Nightcrawler worm on a red ant hill, and they swarmed and worked all day until they made their hole big enough to drag him in.
