April 14, 2009: Hiawatha Tornado

This is an old picture from 2005, but I hadn't seen it so I suppose at least some of you haven't either.

It was taken in Hiawatha, Kansas, and shows the power, scary power, of a tornado.

A couple weeks ago I was startled by high wind, thunder, and nickel size hail that made a hell of a racket on the roof.
Having the shades drawn, I had no idea what it was and wondered if it was a tornado. Then I realized I've never heard a tornado,
only people describing it as sounding like a freight train, so I wouldn't be able to tell if it was... until it was too late.
Glad we don't get them here very often.

Actually it's one of a series of pictures taken that day which can be found here.

It's amazing what some folks will do for a good picture. Would you stand there with that flying lumberyard coming at you?

Dumpsters! We got dumpsters!

Shawnee123  Tuesday Apr 14 11:26 AM

That tornado picture thrills me, in a very sick and twisted way.

Thanks Shel. (It's a movie quote from Twister Shawnee.)

And I want to know why the white car in the link is driving towards the thing - doesn't look like a typical storm chaser.

Oh. A pop culture reference I didn't get! I saw the movie a long time ago.

As to the car, it's probably some crazy person, like me.

sweetwater  Tuesday Apr 14 03:23 PM

I remember the constant news reports about the Xenia tornado. It ate the town, right?

Shawnee123  Tuesday Apr 14 03:33 PM

My mom still has the book that the Dayton paper put out about the Xenia tornado. It pretty much took the whole town.

It also spawned the song "Don't Cry For Me, I'm From Xenia." That may have come first, though.

This was what one tornado did to Greensburg, KS. My inlaws had driven through this town mere hours before the hit, too.

Gravdigr  Friday Apr 17 04:48 PM

Kablooey.
