Feb 10, 2009: Blue Mustang

No, not this kind of blue Mustang;

This kind of blue mustang.

Wolf found this blue fiberglass Mustang statue that's stirred up some people in Denver.

Quote:
Rearing 32 feet high, the metallic blue mustang sculpture demands the attention of every traveler through Denver International Airport.

But the wild look of "Mustang" is prompting some to wonder if the sculpture installed just a year ago should be moved somewhere less prominent. Alternate monikers suggested for the horse with the glowering eyes include "Bluecifer," "Satan's Steed" and "Blue Devil Horse."
Apparently some local do-gooders have started a campaign to protect their fellow travelers from the Devil's mustang.
Quote:
"What exactly was the deal with that horse?" said Rachel Hultin, a Denver real estate agent who's behind a Facebook site that derides the sculpture.
~snip~
"It's not the image you want in your head as you're about to board a plane," said Christie Carlson of the Denver suburb of Thornton. "My daughter asked me 'Is that the devil's horse?'"
OMG, think of the children!

On the other side;
Quote:
Stan Ryland, a business development manager from Huntington Beach, California, isn't bothered by the horse's look.

"That's what horses in the wild look like," he said as he waited to board a plane Saturday. "They survived the wilderness and the mean ones led the pack."
Some think the statue is evil because it killed the artist;
Quote:
The city of Denver commissioned the fiberglass sculpture from New Mexico artist Luis Jimenez in 1993, two years before the airport opened. His 1969 sculpture "Man on Fire" and 1990's "Vaquero" have been displayed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

In 2006, Jimenez was killed when a section of the unfinished horse fell from a hoist at his Hondo, New Mexico, studio. Jimenez's sons, Adan and Orion, completed the sculpture, which was installed Feb. 11, 2008.
This statue wasn't their first choice though;
Quote:
Jimenez's widow, Susan Jimenez, said the original proposal was for a sculpture of a buffalo stampede. That was rejected because buffalo were hunted to near extinction in the West.
Buffalo? Heaven forbid... makes the politically-correct-police all queasy, you know.

I think people with too much time of their hands, sure can find dumb shit to worry about.

Slight  Tuesday Feb 10 03:15 AM

Every time I drive out to DIA I like to look at this guy, I think he's especially cool at night. Apparently he's a larger version of Mesteņo in OK.

I'll agree with the "Maude Flanders'" out there that it looks evil. So what!? Do you want to take gargoyles off of the Notre Dame? Sillyness (but so is getting this story from Fox News)

Sundae  Tuesday Feb 10 04:38 AM

I agree with Slight.
Since when did everything in America have to look like a Disney cartoon?
I think it's wonderful. I'd want my photo taken with it (32 feet! Imagine the size of its BALLS!)

And if your daughter is that scared of teh debbil "Maude", I suggest you stop filling her with those scary church stories. FTR, if I had asked my Nan if it was the devil's horse, she would have said, "Yes! He parks it here during the day, then at night he goes riding on it looking for naughty children!"

ZenGum  Tuesday Feb 10 06:42 AM

What Sundae said.

And cut the whining, killjoy wowsers. They could quite easily have given it a four-foot donger too.

Shawnee123  Tuesday Feb 10 08:30 AM

It's way cool!

Sheldonrs  Tuesday Feb 10 08:38 AM

Ok, FINE! I'LL be the one to say it!!

Now THAT'S a horse of a different color!

There! Are you happy now?!!!

Shawnee123  Tuesday Feb 10 08:50 AM

Yeah! His arms kind of look like the Cowardly Lion: Put 'em up....put 'em up.

Sheldonrs  Tuesday Feb 10 09:16 AM

Maybe he just needs to get laid. Worst case of blue balls I've ever seen!

Shawnee123  Tuesday Feb 10 09:30 AM

Get off your high horse, just because you be gettin' some all the time.

HungLikeJesus  Tuesday Feb 10 10:00 AM

I was at the airport the day they put that up. It's really great, but it is a little spooky, particularly at night when it's red eyes are all lit up.

sweetwater  Tuesday Feb 10 10:56 AM

It started off looking like this, but then a hunk of it fell and killed the artist. Naturally, when the sons had to complete the statue it turned out all mean looking. Maybe he shouldn't have cut them out of his will.

Coign  Tuesday Feb 10 12:07 PM

I remember reading about this in the Vail Daily up here and immediately thought, "Sweet, I wonder if we could get one of those up here. I love evil haunted sculptures."

capnhowdy  Tuesday Feb 10 05:01 PM

They were worried about the buffalo stampede sculpture because of them being hunted to near extinction.

In those days they didn't exactly give the wild horse a fair shake either.

THIS story ties both the wind turbine generator IotD and this one together.

TheMercenary  Tuesday Feb 10 08:33 PM

The first kind of Mustang is much better than any fiberglass horse. Or any horse for that matter.

It's like Mr Eddy Krueger.

Ba dum dum

TheMercenary  Tuesday Feb 10 09:02 PM

Now this is a Mustang!

capnhowdy  Tuesday Feb 10 09:35 PM

Where's Bullitt w/ u need him?

I'm a Carroll Shelby fan.... love the GT500's.

Only in my dreams.

Any rich girls wanna get married?

sweetwater  Tuesday Feb 10 10:09 PM

I like mustangs, too - horses, cars, aircraft - but I just got to see, and have my pic taken, in the Red Demon Dodge Challenger by Sanderson & Barris. Beautiful!

TheMercenary  Tuesday Feb 10 11:16 PM

I almost bought a Saleen a few years back. I still have my eye on one. Maybe this year. Those damm cars are hot.

According to the BBC you'll get your own down in Kent at 164ft (50 metres) - Oh, the balls!
(BBC news)

xoxoxoBruce  Saturday Feb 21 02:12 AM

Maybe this is why some people are freaked.

Thank you Bruce. It scares the bejeezus outta me every time I'm at the airport at night. I guess it's a good way to scare visitors outta moving here....."If you think Denver's horses are scary......"

Undertoad  Wednesday Feb 25 01:48 PM

Looks like a case for the red-eye removal tool.

Sheldonrs  Wednesday Feb 25 02:57 PM

Now if only they could play Vaughn Monroe singing "Ghost Riders In The Sky" everynight.

ZenGum  Wednesday Feb 25 07:24 PM

What a totally awsome picture!

Next track should be Riders on the Storm by the Doors.

bluecuracao  Thursday Feb 26 03:29 AM

I didn't know that Luis Jimenez had died. Fuck.
