Undertoad Tuesday Aug 6 01:26 PM8/6/2002: NYC 1977 blackout from space
Several times on IotD and on the Cellar, we've talked about the night sky satellite image, which captures the entire world at night. The earth picture of the day recently featured this shot, which isolates NYC during the 1977 blackout.
It's interesting to see what they were shooting back in the late 70s, and how much better they are at capturing earth images today. (The "earth at night" picture is here at Astronomy Pic of the Day.) It's also interesting to see that if we were to isolate on this same section today, judging from the earth at night pic up close, most of the area shown would be lit.
