Jan 15, 2009: Fighting City Hall
Anthony Herman is fighting city hall in Polk City, Iowa. As a matter of fact he's been fighting city hall for three years, with no end in sight.

He realizes that some people tend to look askance when they see 8-inch-tall letters calling city leaders names not generally popular with the chamber of commerce. But Herman, a car salesman now embroiled in a three-year legal battle with Polk City officials, insists he doesn't have any choice. "This isn't what I want to be," said the owner of Mighty Good Used Cars, as well as an adjoining lube shop and a car wash. "I don't want to be the crazy person with the crazy sign out front. ... What else am I supposed to do?" |

City leaders say Herman's messages have drawn complaints from some residents - mostly parents who came across them while transporting small, reading-age children - but insist that the city has no plans to try to interfere with his right to free speech. "A lot of people are coming out of the woodwork to look at it," Heuertz said of the sign. "So tourism's not a problem ... . |

Man, what? We're obviously getting only one side of the story here. What did he do to draw their harassment? Was it deserved or not?

I'm surprised they haven't cited him for a distraction. I am sure he is basking in the publicity. Truth be known, that's his angle from jump street.

It might give pause to possible future employers, tho. One rule of interviewing is to never badmouth your previous bosses -- the person interviewing you knows if they hire you, they will be your 'previous' boss someday.

Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, I know interviewing etiquete. And even though the old guy is on my "naughty list" for next xmas, it's really the California ecomomy to blame. 16 people laid off and a large printing plant shuttered for 6-9 months sucks. But thanks for the nice words. 'nuf sad stuff, on with the fun!

Couldn't city hall just send the spelling police after him? What with quik, lieing, councl, and nasi, they should have enough of a case to make the idiot close his business while he goes back to complete the third grade.
At least he spelled 'turd' correctly. His mother must be proud.

Nobody ever has a complete set of those sign letters. I think Nazi was spelled with a backwards 2, wasn't it? You can tell from the first sign (look at the Y in mayor) that he doesn't have any Y's.
He's doing the best he can with what he's got.
