7/6/2002: Naked PETA at Pamplona

Slithy_Tove sends along this nice one that brings together a few IotD themes of the past: PETA, naked protestors, and international culture.

The Ananova story explains that the PETA folks want to tell the tourists that the bulls are kinda mistreated. They say the tourists would stay home if they knew that the bulls were hit with cattle prods and sticks to enrage them before the run. They say their eyes are smeared with petroleum jelly and their bodies are weakened by laxatives before the bullfights that follow.

I'm not sure I get that message from this protest though. The main message I get from this protest is that it must be fashionable for European women to shave their coochies.

They also need smaller signs!

Slight  Saturday Jul 6 09:49 AM

Don't get me wrong here but why is the guy on the right wearing boxers? I am glad he is, but it seems to say that this guy has no balls (pun intended).

The dude with the bull's head is just funny. Coochies, that sounds hilarious UT.

Well, as long as they're shaving under their arms.

I guess they don't even like to wear their own fur.

ROFL!

looks to me that at least some of those protesters are wearing leather shoes (or partial leather)..... those poor cattle that were mistreated and died so these protestors wouldn't get their feet hurt on that nasty pavement....

I doubt it. You can bet that these people scrutinize every single purchase they make so as to avoid any animal products or testing. They probably post a list of "animal-friendly" vendors; their shoes are surely simulated leather.

Which I always get a kick out of. OK they wear simulated leather - what's that made of? Oil - so they end up supporting cutting down some forest, building a pipleine, and a refinery, and some factory to make the simulated leather. I wonder how many animals died to make that?

I wrote this on K5. It was rated 3.5. I'm not writing at K5 any longer.
---

Many species survive by developing ways to taste bad to their predators. Some species even evolve to look like like the bad-tasting species. In this way, they try to ensure the replication of their DNA. In the long view of nature, the only thing that matters to a species is if it can reliably and consistently accomplish that task.

Livestock animals figured out an even better plan. Met with the first predator ever to consciously understand animal husbandry, these species won not by tasting BAD, but by tasting GOOD. They were also easy to hunt and provided a large amount of the kind of protein their new predators needed.

Amazingly, their DNA was replicated further and in immense numbers -- much greater numbers than ever seen in the bad-tasting animals.

And, in turn, nothing could be worse for it as a species than if it suddenly were to fall out of favor. What would happen to cows if we stopped eating them? After 100 years. there would be probably be less than 10,000 of them, and all in captivity.

The livestock animal's fate rests in your hands. If you want to help it, eat it. That is its natural desire, its destiny, its plan.

As any Douglas Adams cow would gladly tell you.

Welcome to the club, my friend. I haven't posted on K5 in over a year and for the same reason - there's not much that sucks worse than writing a good post and getting a shit score on it. Really makes you feel like never writing again.

Hee! If I've channelled or inadvertently copied Douglas Adams, then I'm a happy guy.

And, strangely enough, the cows ally with Gateway, who allies with Gates. Off with their hooves!

Torrere  Thursday Jul 11 05:25 AM

(LOL @ undertoad the pseudo- Queen of Hearts)

Gateway abuses the likeness of the cows for it's own profit, probably with no intended benefit to the cows. This clear violation of their dignity is an outrage to us all.

Lift the shackles of Gateway's abusive misuse of bovine symbols!

Free the cows!

I once saw a vegan wearing cow pattern leg warmers
I almost killed myself laughing at the irony of it.
