July 23, 2008: Ajolote

From Neatorama.
I wonder if that border fence with Mexico, will go down in the ground enough to stop these ugly Ajolotes?

Quote:
Mexican reptile of the genus Bipes. It and several other tropical burrowing species are placed in the Amphisbaenia, a group separate from lizards and snakes among the Squamata. Unlike the others, however, which have no legs, it has a pair of short but well-developed front legs. In line with its burrowing habits, the skull is very solid, the eyes small, and external ears absent.

The scales are arranged in rings, giving the body a wormlike appearance.

Homeland security

I dont think the fence is any good. But you guys got Homeland Security, right?

xoxoxoBruce  Wednesday Jul 23 03:02 AM

Not yet, but they're spending on it.

ZenGum  Wednesday Jul 23 04:05 AM

The stretch-limo of the reptile world.

I ajalote of fun thinking that up.

newtimer  Wednesday Jul 23 04:57 AM

Anyone here got the recipe for chipotle ajalote? I remember it has a good flavor, but it's kind of bony.

Sundae  Wednesday Jul 23 05:52 AM

I don't know why, but this really give me the judders.
Odd, because I like reptiles. Perhaps because it looks like a giant worm (I save them when I see them on the pavement, but I still don't like them much) or perhaps because of the word burrowing. Creepy.

Just showed my 12 yr old this pic, and as suspected, she says "I want one!!"

(shudder)

sweetwater  Wednesday Jul 23 03:27 PM

I was certain this was going to turn out to be from the April (Fools) issue of Discover magazine, but apparently it's real - and from the expression on its face, it looks like it thinks that we are not.

Cloud  Wednesday Jul 23 03:38 PM

yeah, I thought it was fake, too, checked out Snopes and everything. There's a little stub on WikiP--the salamander pic is SO CUTE! but my first thought was . . . there are things still ALIVE in the lake beneath Mexico City????!

monster  Wednesday Jul 23 05:53 PM

It's a penis with legs is all.

Just think, in a few thousand years it should be able to walk upright.

Or possibly sooner if anyone can figure out how to sneak little blue pills into its diet.
