xoxoxoBruce Thursday Feb 21 01:50 AMFebruary 21, 2008: DIY House
How I built my house for £4,000.
Quote:
When he's expecting visitors, Steve James watches out the windows so he can catch the look on their faces when they see his house for the first time. "It's always the same," he say. "There's an intense stare and total mystification, as if they can't quite believe what they are seeing." This may be because James's house is made of straw and has a turf roof covered in flowers.

It's a little on the small side, but Steve James claims on his website, you can built four story buildings with the same technology... and a little more money.
I challenge James to get a permit to build that in my Township.
Kolbenfresser Thursday Feb 21 03:08 AMFancy hut! Lovely!
SPUCK Thursday Feb 21 05:20 AMClearly one mans house is another mans... hut.
Griff Thursday Feb 21 07:39 AMVery cool. My township would approve, but COG would make him build in the shadow of a giant sandmound for his crapper.
DanaC Thursday Feb 21 08:20 AMCouldn't do that where I live, it'd blow away......or get washed away by rain :P

Has this guy not read "The Three Little Pigs"? He's just asking for a visit from a wolf.
Things did not go well for the first pig.
Aliantha Thursday Feb 21 05:15 PMThe pictures of the interior are really quite beautiful.
If you had the land and location, a few of these dotted about would make fantastic romantic getaways. It ust looks so cosy.
euphoriatheory Thursday Feb 21 05:42 PMSo uh.... did he wire that thing with Fios, or....

Surely, your weather can't be worse than Dumfries, Scotland.
beauregaardhooligan Friday Feb 22 03:46 PMStraw bale construction is quite durable, amazingly snug and well insulated, and has been around for decades, if not centuries.

Sorry, I wasn't entirely clear: I didn't mean the weather in Yorkshire per se, rather the weather in the Pennines. My village is perched at the top of a hill and is ravaged by heavy winds on a regular basis. There's a reason most of the houses around here are short squat and made from stone :P
