November 22, 2007: Massive hair ball

Attachment 15875

From CNN.

Highlights from the article:

Quote:

The New England Journal of Medicine reports on the case of a previously healthy 18-year-old woman who consulted a team of gastrointestinal specialists.

She complained of a five-month history of pain and swelling in her abdomen, vomiting after eating and a 40-pound weight loss.

After a scan of the woman's abdomen showed a large mass, doctors lowered a scope through her esophagus.

It revealed "a large bezoar [hairball - ZG] occluding nearly the entire stomach," wrote Drs. Ronald M. Levy and Srinadh Komanduri, gastroenterologists at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

....

The woman underwent surgery to remove the mass of black, curly hair, which weighed 10 pounds and measured 15 inches by 7 inches by 7 inches, the doctors said.

Five days later, she was eating normally and was sent home.

Oh bugger I forgot to title the thread properly.
And that's the only thing I can't edit.
Help me Undertoad Kenobi, you're my only hope [/Leia]

EDIT: Thanks! Whether it be UT, or some other moderator, or the noodley appendage itself!

Sundae  Thursday Nov 22 11:09 AM

I think I'd rather be poisoned than eat that.

"On questioning, the patient stated that she had had a habit of eating her hair for many years -- a condition called trichophagia," they wrote.
"It seemed like she'd been doing this for several years," Levy told CNN.

A year later, the pain and vomiting were gone, the patient had regained 20 pounds "and reports that she has stopped eating her hair."

Better than eating someone else's hair - have to go to a lot of shady restaurants for that..

I thought maybe she was giving her 27 cats a daily bath.

Gravdigr  Friday Nov 23 01:02 AM

Ok. I'll be that guy...

Put some ketchup on it & call it a loaf. Let's eat.

Kolbenfresser  Friday Nov 23 04:17 AM

Anybody who fixed a plugged sink knows how that nice-looking bezoar must smell. Thought about that? Poor Drs. Drs. Levy and Komanduri.

ViennaWaits  Sunday Nov 25 01:25 PM

Congratulations! It's a hairball!

Ugh... I don't think I've ever been so disgusted.

Ya think they prodded it in disbelief when they pulled it out?

Ooohhhhh that's NASTY.

Never substitute a hairbrush for a spagetti strainer.

Are they sure she wasn't pregnant with Cousin Itt's baby?

Sundae  Monday Nov 26 05:14 PM

Don't forget Shawnee, she ate at least 10lbs hair first. And the rest of the loss would have been due to not having any room in her stomach and vomiting after eating. You could achieve the same effect with two fingers...

Nope, it's not going to tempt me!

I love the little pair of snippy scissors on top of it...as if in just one little snip it was gone. Makes for a good advertising campaign for the snippy scissors company.
