August 1, 2007: Goring at Pamplona

The annual running of the bulls sometimes produces an IotD, and it certainly has here. bigw00dy finds this item, the full story here...

Quote:
A bull that broke from the pack seriously gored two American brothers, catching one on each of its horns during the running of the bulls festival in Pamplona, where both were recovering Friday in the hospital.

Lawrence and Michael Lenahan were gored simultaneously by the bull, which also injured 11 other people Thursday. It was the worst day for injuries in the nine-day festival.

"I started yelling at my brother to show him I was bleeding everywhere but he showed me he was bleeding everywhere," said Lawrence Lenahan, a 26-year-old Air Force captain from Hermosa Beach, Calif., in a telephone interview from his hospital bed.

He was gored in the buttocks, while Michael Lenahan, 23, of Philadelphia, was injured in his leg and was recovering well from surgery at the same hospital.
All I can say is

ow.

Flint  Wednesday Aug 1 11:46 AM

His leg got ƒucked, up.

Uisge Beatha  Wednesday Aug 1 12:19 PM

Damn, that's so nasty even I can't joke about it.

Almost.

Looks like he emulated the high heel race winner and tried to get a leg up on the competition.

Spacecow  Wednesday Aug 1 12:28 PM

Things under the skin = AIIIIIEEEEEEE.

barefoot serpent  Wednesday Aug 1 12:31 PM

That's gonna leave a mark.

Shawnee123  Wednesday Aug 1 12:31 PM

[channelling Nelson Muntz]Ha Ha! [\channelling Nelson Muntz]

jinx  Wednesday Aug 1 12:34 PM

Where's the simultaneous butt goring???

wolf  Wednesday Aug 1 01:39 PM

Was either of those Lenahan brothers the third miracle for the canonization of John Neuman? I know that was the family name of the kid ... couldn't be, though, they're too young, by a smidge.

Shawnee123  Wednesday Aug 1 01:39 PM

Yeah, a butt-goring would have been the icing on the ass, so to speak.

jinx  Wednesday Aug 1 02:02 PM

Hey UT, the full story link isn't right.

Silazius  Wednesday Aug 1 02:31 PM

Wow!

Tis but a flesh-wound....NOT!

smurfalicious  Wednesday Aug 1 02:34 PM

I was hoping for a little anal action.

EDIT:
wrong thread, sorry.

Sarasvati48  Wednesday Aug 1 02:45 PM

Unfortuanately, that Air Force captain is due for some consequences under the UCMJ...

Undertoad  Wednesday Aug 1 03:14 PM

When I look at that picture, I think, "Man, that would itch."

Doesn't it? Wouldn't that itch?

He did that without balls?!?

no but there's a scene very reminiscent of the clear outline of the horn under his skin. I won't spoil it. The movie was very entertaining. Recommended.

I think the picture shows another lucky contestant:

Quote:
Another participant, Christopher Neiff, 24, of Norway, had the bull's horn tear into his shin and slide under the skin right up to his knee.

They penalize you for being a dumb-ass even on leave?

Aliantha  Thursday Aug 2 06:19 AM

I've avoided looking at this thread for a couple of days now.

I wish I was still avoiding it.

morie  Thursday Aug 2 07:17 AM

that's just awesome. would've been better if it had been more graphic, like with blood and guts all over the place. now he knows how bulls probably feel when people gore them with sharp implements in bullfights and the like. i'm not a fan of peta's running of the nudes, but neither am a fan of cruelty to animals. so he deserves it. way to go Bull!

Uisge Beatha  Thursday Aug 2 08:27 AM

Welcome to The Cellar, morie!

I agree with Morie on this one. Nice to 'meet' you btw, welcome to the Cellar.

dar512  Thursday Aug 2 10:33 AM

It's all fun and games until someone gets a knee poked out.

Shawnee123  Thursday Aug 2 11:53 AM

lol @ dar.

I'm so amazed there hasn't been a post admonishing all of us who applaud the bull. Something about how we just don't understand, and we should feel bad for the guy. That is the usual knee-jerk (see what I did there? Knee? Jerk?) reaction.

jinx  Thursday Aug 2 11:58 AM

It's a cultural thing...

Shawnee123  Thursday Aug 2 12:17 PM

Yeah, that.

PhoenixTFB  Thursday Aug 2 01:01 PM

Ouch...I'm an EMT and that makes me cringe =P

Yes, I thought of that, too.

glatt  Thursday Aug 2 04:01 PM

Somebody ought to come up with a saying about this. Something like "if you antagonize the bull, you will receive the horns." Hmmm...

Flint  Thursday Aug 2 04:03 PM

..."don't make the bull angry, you wouldn't like him when he's angry" ???

Uisge Beatha  Thursday Aug 2 04:06 PM

Tease the toro, heed the horns.

Flint  Thursday Aug 2 04:08 PM

ba-zzzing!

We had a book when I was a kid, "Don't Tease the Weasel" (now I've told you twice; the weasel wouldn't like it, and teasing ins't nice ...)

Shawnee123  Thursday Aug 2 04:11 PM

Those weasels are so temperamental. Always poppin', when the monkey thought twas all in fun.

Flint  Thursday Aug 2 04:13 PM

Having a weasel pop you in the monkey isn't so bad...

Right on. Why have they been running with the bulls for hundreds of years? Because it's dangerous. The adrenaline rush, showing their bravery... and too drunk to think straight.

If nobody ever got hurt, there wouldn't be much point, so these brothers from the US have done their part to insure the tradition will continue.
Actually, the running is much more fair to the bulls than the bullfights later in the day.

Hoof Hearted  Thursday Aug 2 06:40 PM

If you don't grab the bull by the horns, the bull will grab you with their horns!

Aliantha  Thursday Aug 2 08:05 PM

Red Tshirt? $20
Running Shoes? $150
Keg of Beer? $100
Bull horn in the leg? Priceless!

For everything else, there's Mastercard.

You just might be on to something there glatt.

monster  Thursday Aug 2 08:38 PM

A horn in the knee is worth two in the butt?

xoxoxoBruce  Thursday Aug 2 08:45 PM

Don't mess with horny males unless you want to be gored.

monster  Thursday Aug 2 09:39 PM

Run the Bulls, Ruin the Balls

Hoof Hearted  Thursday Aug 2 10:25 PM

Run the bulls, risk the balls...?

monster  Thursday Aug 2 10:38 PM

Too wishy-washy. "Sayings" are always very definite about the dire consequences....

starve a cold feed a fever
spoil the child ruin the man

Sundae  Saturday Aug 4 08:00 AM

If you run with the bulls you better have spare balls

DanaC  Saturday Aug 4 11:39 AM

People with glass balls shouldn't run with bulls in a china shop......hmmm....I'll keep working on it.

JuancoRocks  Saturday Aug 4 08:45 PM

Mess With The Bull

Song lyrics keep popping up in my mind........

"I've Got You Under My Skin"........

Line two "I've got you deep in (the heart) a part of me"....

Arghhhhh.........

DanaC  Saturday Aug 4 09:11 PM

Damn it Juanco, now that bloody song will be going around my head for days.

JuancoRocks  Saturday Aug 4 09:17 PM

OK If you insist......
by Cole Porter....

I've got you under my skin
I have got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart, you're really a part of me
And I've got you under my skin

I have tried so, not to give in
I've said to myself this affair it never would go so well
But why should I try to resist when I know so well
That I've got you under my skin

I would sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of a warning voice that comes in the night and repeats in my ear
Don't you know you're fool you never can win
Use your mentality, wake up to reality

For each time I do
Just the thought of you
Makes me stop before I begin
Because I've got you under my skin

Everybody sing.......

Hoof Hearted  Saturday Aug 4 09:51 PM

Sign on property:
Hope you can run fast. This bull can cross the pasture in 6 seconds.

Uisge Beatha  Saturday Aug 4 10:22 PM

Bull in a china shop, indeed. Does anybody know the kind of coordination required to insert a horn just so while that chuckle-head is running around?

Quote:
The Encierro involves running in front of bulls down an 825-metre (0.51 mile) stretch of cobbled streets of a section of the old town of Pamplona.
That half mile run on slippery cobblestones, with a bunch of 90 degree turns, is normally done in two minutes... if they don't stop to gore anyone.
Can you say four minute mile?

deadbeater  Monday Aug 6 07:42 PM

Man, the bull got double the action, goring two guys simutaneously!

xoxoxoBruce  Monday Aug 6 07:50 PM

Yeah, much more dangerous than unicorns..... But watch out for the running of the Tricratops.

rkzenrage  Monday Aug 6 10:04 PM

I rode a bull once and felt really stupid... after that you don't wanna' know what I think about those guys.
