June 22, 2007: Hippo as pet?!

We've heard these ugly beasts are amongst the meanest in the animal kingdom, but there's one in South Africa that's taken to being a member of the family.

According to the full story, this beast named Jessica was hand-raised by her owner after washing up on the lawn. It was lucky she washed up on the lawn of a game ranger.

She seems to get along well with the family dogs. In fact she helped to groom the puppies:

it drinks piss?

Shawnee123  Friday Jun 22 09:14 AM

Sweet! She could have eaten the puppies.

That's no hippo! That's my wife!

According to TFA, it's part of her daily cup o' joe. 10 liters daily! She should really cut back.

skysidhe  Friday Jun 22 10:43 AM

According to the article she seems so sweet! There are problems arising like her weight and loving to plop on the bed...the male hippos showing up and her love for a good cup a joe.

I hope they are calling some good zoos where she can be loved and protected!

Neighbor: Hey Roy, can you get sick from drinking piss?
Roy: I think you can.
Neighbor: Even if its your own?

xoxoxoBruce  Friday Jun 22 12:46 PM

Shame she didn't wash up on a dentist's lawn.

I wouldn't think that would be nearly as bad as the shit and urine spraying behavior.

Quote:
To mark territory, hippos spin their tails while defecating to distribute their excrement over the greatest possible area.[7] Hippos also urinate backwards (are retromingent), likely for the same reason. [8]

A wonderful opportunity to bring together two things from different parts of the world: the hippo from Africa, and the hungi from New Zealand.

Gravdigr  Saturday Jun 23 06:12 AM

If ya got two of those things, do ya got hippopotamussusses? Or, hippopotami? Or, hippopotamice? Or, hippos? Or, hippoes? Or would they be "Those two shit-flicking monstrosities."?

Is that where the word minge comes from?

mfrasier31  Sunday Jun 24 01:16 AM

Great, now I have to find a way to work that great phrase, "Shit-flicking monstrocities" into conversation.

xoxoxoBruce  Sunday Jun 24 01:11 PM

Welcome to the Cellar mfrasier31.

What... you never talk about your inlaws?

Cyclefrance  Monday Jun 25 01:32 AM

Strange, that with all that affection for mud they have, you never see one at Glastonbury

artemis05  Monday Jun 25 05:46 AM

baby got back

Talanga  Thursday Jun 28 08:32 AM

Retromingent – we use that word together with anal retentive, i.e. he's AR and retromingent. Ouch! Lovely, happy hippo.

Rexmons  Thursday Jun 28 10:03 AM

1. It's not piss it's sweetned coffee

2. Hippop's kill more people in Africa than any other animal. People have reported finding lions and crocodiles bitten in half by a hippo.

With the weather getting hot lately, a constipated hippo could be used as a local cooling fan. Strategically placed, 1 hippo per 800 square feet should just about do it. Orient spinning hindquarters to direct cooling air flow and angle down roughly at a 10 degree angle and voila!

xoxoxoBruce  Thursday Jun 28 02:40 PM

Welcome to the Cellar, Freshness Dated.
That's a pretty risky plan considering you never know when the dam will break.

SPUCK  Friday Jun 29 05:46 AM

Yeah, spin spin spin spin spin

CHOMP!
