November 4, 2006: Portrait of nails

This one's been in the queue for a while too, but it's worthy. The official caption:

Quote:
Albanian artist Saimir Strati, 40, works on a portrait of Leonardo Da Vinci using industrial nails at the International Centre of Culture in Tirana. He is attempting to produce the world's largest three-dimensional portrait using nails in order to secure a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

How old is that picture? He might be finished by now. I'd like to see the finished work!

Signed and delivered

chrisinhouston  Saturday Nov 4 02:07 PM

I would have used a nail gun. Home Depot has them on sale for the holidays!

mcnugget91  Saturday Nov 4 03:32 PM

Thanks Max! Wow, it's amazing! His other stuff isn't too shabby either.

How good does a nail mosaic have to be to qualify for the record? This record seems pretty attainable if the goal is only quantity, not quality. I'm imagining a string of ever-bigger, ever-crappier art from all over the world...

CaliforniaMama  Saturday Nov 4 05:52 PM

Interesting. I wonder if he planned for tarnishing/rusting/weathering of nails and how that will modify the works . . .

Check out Inkie Whang's Lego piece: http://www.freynorris.com/dynamic/artist.asp?ArtistID=9

Why not use a nice handgun? They're easy to get too. (Why do I get the feeling that some artist somewhere has done this already?)

think he used one of those anti-vibrating hammers, with the tuning fork inside?

SPUCK  Monday Nov 6 06:19 AM

Notice the carpal tunnel wrist band? He's probably on full disability now...

chrisinhouston  Monday Nov 6 08:16 AM

To suffer to produce your art, now that's dedication!

Sheldonrs  Monday Nov 6 09:14 AM

I've never been a fan of artists who just bang out the work.

xoxoxoBruce  Monday Nov 6 05:59 PM

Groan.....

magilla  Tuesday Nov 7 10:14 AM

Man, I thought for sure it was gonna be someone doing something with fingernails. Glad I was wrong.
