October 30, 2006: Pelican attacks pigeon

Wolf submits this BBC story image and notes "non friday iotd".

Yes, although the image above looks kind of interesting, it's a slow murder in progress. According to the story,

Quote:
Families and tourists in a London park were left shocked when a pelican picked up and swallowed a pigeon.

The unusual wildlife spectacle in St James's Park was caught on camera by photographer Cathal McNaughton.

He said the Eastern White pelican had the unfortunate pigeon in its beak for more than 20 minutes before swallowing it whole.

An RSPB spokesman said: "It is almost unheard of for a pelican to eat a bird. Their diet should be strictly fish."
Well done McNaughton, an awesome shot. Not so well done, rude pelican.

Happy Monkey  Monday Oct 30 01:15 PM

Expanding his horizons. Sometimes you just get sick of fish...

rkzenrage  Monday Oct 30 01:16 PM

Why is this any worse than eating a fish?

lumberjim  Monday Oct 30 01:21 PM

DEJA VU

Sheldonrs  Monday Oct 30 01:48 PM

Trilby  Monday Oct 30 04:33 PM

So. You're a pigeon. You're walking around, feelin' safe coz you're with other feathered, billed critters and then-BAM!-you get eaten.

Damn MotherNature can be a bitch.

footfootfoot  Monday Oct 30 06:52 PM

That's "bee yotch", bitch.
:p

DucksNuts  Monday Oct 30 07:04 PM

Why would you just sit there like that??

"oh sure, no eat me, its fine..should I scrunch down a little or point my toes to make it easier?"

I'd be squawking like a bee yotch

Oh blerg...I just watched the video

Ubergeek  Monday Oct 30 07:13 PM

Aliantha  Monday Oct 30 07:14 PM

Hmmm...don't know what to say about this pic. On the one hand, it's a bit hard to swallow. Pardon the pun. On the other, I guess that's just the way the feathers fall in the wide wonderful world we live in.

Aliantha  Monday Oct 30 09:08 PM

So if you ate the pelican would it be pigeon flavoured? That'd certainly be better economy if it did.

xoxoxoBruce  Monday Oct 30 11:42 PM

Catch that sucker and breed it, clone it, anything. We need a lot more of him/her....I'm not good at Pelican sexing...... to help the Peregrine Falcons clean up the cities.
Take the money from the statue cleaning fund.

Aliantha  Monday Oct 30 11:44 PM

Have you seen the size of pelican shits?

Not sure we want to know how you know...

Aliantha  Tuesday Oct 31 12:18 AM

Well it's quite simple really. There's a bridge in my city which goes over a bay. The bridge is lit by a series of overhead street lights. The pelicans perch on these during the day while they scope the bay for food. Nature calls and they shit on your windscreen.

Trying to clean pelican shit off your windscreen with the wipers and water from little squirters is just simply pointless. It just smears everywhere.

footfootfoot  Tuesday Oct 31 12:34 AM

Between the stingrays and the pelicans Australia is becoming less and less attractive as my new home. Next you'll probably tell me some crazy shit like, oh I don't know,

soil erosion from overgrazing, industrial development, urbanization, and poor farming practices; soil salinity rising due to the use of poor quality water; desertification; clearing for agricultural purposes threatens the natural habitat of many unique animal and plant species; the Great Barrier Reef off the northeast coast, the largest coral reef in the world, is threatened by increased shipping and its popularity as a tourist site; limited natural fresh water resources
Or that,

Tasmania is one of the world's major suppliers of licit opiate products; government maintains strict controls over areas of opium poppy cultivation and output of poppy straw concentrate

Aliantha  Tuesday Oct 31 12:38 AM

lol...I could tell you that...

But you'd probably prefer to hear about the beautiful beaches and the fantastic 'bird watching' available on said beaches. Coupled with some of the most exotic rainforests in the world...not to mention arid desert landscapes filled with life and colour.

Oh yeah...and don't forget the awesome people who live here.

SPUCK  Tuesday Oct 31 05:07 AM

And large crocs..

Pricked up your interest, did it?

TropicFever  Tuesday Oct 31 12:26 PM

isn't a pigeon's beak pretty sharp? couldn't it just pierce right through that flimsy skin 'throat'. now that would fix that pelican's ass.

Did you see the one of the snake regurgitating the hippo, or maybe it was a tapir. Couldn't make out the language so I don't know how they got together or whether the animal survived:
