While discussing the terms of the vice-presidential debate, Quayle's side suggested that "props" be allowed, mainly because the Vice-President wanted to read directly from Al Gore's book on the environment, "Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit." Gore's people agreed, saying that the Senator would then use a potato as a prop. Quayle quickly abandoned the proposal. (reported in The NY Times, 10/6/92)
